How To Get Your Child Flossing From A Young Age
As parents, we all want our children to grow up healthy and happy, and that includes having strong, cavity-free teeth. While brushing twice a day is usually a well-established habit early on, flossing often gets overlooked until much later. Flossing and brushing go hand in hand when it comes to oral hygiene, and that’s no different for your children!
-
Start when teeth touch
You don’t need to wait until your child has a full mouth of teeth to begin flossing. As soon as two teeth touch, usually around age 2 to 3, it’s time to start. These tight spaces are where food and plaque like to hide, and where a toothbrush can’t always reach.
-
Use the right tools
Small hands and mouths need the right equipment. For kids you can try using:
-
Floss picks or holders designed for kids (easier to use than traditional floss).
-
Water flossers (for older kids or those with braces).
By letting your child pick their flossing tool, it allows them to feel empowered, and in control of their routine.
-
Make flossing fun
For kids, flossing doesn’t sound exciting. But, there are ways to make it seem fun! Try these tips:
-
Use colourful flossers or flavoured dental floss designed for kids.
-
Sing a silly song or make up a flossing dance.
-
Use a sticker chart or small rewards for consistency.
By doing this, you turn flossing into a fun activity that kids can look forward to rather than a chore.
-
Make it into a routine
Just like brushing, flossing should become one of your children's daily habits. Try tying it on to your existing routine, like for example when brushing at night, or right before their bedtime story!
By keeping consistency in their routine, children get used to this process and eventually becomes second nature to them.
