As dentists, we know there are countless teeth whitening myths out there that can misinform, mislead and ultimately harm oral health. It’s our responsibility to educate and raise awareness around these myths, and offer safe, clinically proven, at-home whitening solutions.

The Only Ingredient That Whitens Teeth

You may have questions around teeth whitening like does whitening toothpaste work? Well, aHydrogen Peroxide is the most clinically proven active ingredient to whiten teeth without damaging tooth enamel or harming oral health. Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down stains on the surface of the tooth and lightens the shade of tooth enamel to reveal a whiter smile.

As an active ingredient, Hydrogen Peroxide embeds onto the tooth enamel, gently breaking down stains to reveal a whiter smile.

In our whitening products, we use a small, measured amount of this active ingredient to gently and effectively whiten teeth. Whatever your whitening goals are, we have created a solution that will work for you. From our Teeth Whitening Strips and Teeth Whitening Pen to our Toothpaste for Whitening Teeth, Mouthwash for Whitening Teeth, and Dental Floss for Whitening Teeth, our science-backed, dentist-approved products are clinically proven to support your oral health while whitening your smile.

Lemon Juice & Teeth Whitening

One of the most common myths we hear as dentists is the use of lemon juice to whiten teeth. Calcium in teeth can cause an off-white colour, and lemon juice can strip the teeth of calcium. This is extremely detrimental to tooth health, as once calcium is lost it is difficult to rebuild and replace. Lemon juice has a pH of 2.3, which means it is extremely acidic and will damage teeth almost immediately. Never use lemon juice to whiten teeth - it could cost you your smile.

Coconut Oil Pulling & Teeth Whitening

Oil pulling is an ancient, Indian folk remedy that has been claimed to whiten teeth. There is zero scientific evidence to back up this claim, and while coconut oil pulling is not unsafe, as dentists we cannot recommend oil pulling as an effective way to whiten your teeth.

Charcoal & Teeth Whitening

Another common myth, and one which has gained significant momentum on social media over the last number of years, is the use of charcoal to whiten teeth. Charcoal is abrasive, and it has been suggested that activated charcoal could be used to absorb stains on teeth. There is no scientific evidence to prove this - in fact, activated charcoal can wear down the tooth enamel, making teeth appear more yellow after prolonged use. The wearing down of enamel can cause a host of oral health issues. Whitening with charcoal is a major no-no, despite what you may see online.

Turmeric & Teeth Whitening

The effectiveness of turmeric or banana peel to whiten teeth is unfounded. While many may recommend these natural remedies as solutions to whitening teeth, neither of these options are clinically proven or scientifically studied. Instead, look to clean, active ingredients and clinically proven, specifically formulated products like our Teeth Whitening Strips, Teeth Whitening Pen, Mouthwash for Whitening, Toothpaste for Whitening, and Dental Floss for Whitening Teeth, all of which contain the active ingredient Hydrogen Peroxide, which will safely and effectively whiten your smile.
